A new study shows that the potassium level in coconut water is five times that available in Gatoraide or Poweraide. The study reported by James de Medeiros in Men’s Fitness Online states that researchers giving a presentation at the National Meeting and Exposition of the American Chemical Society (ACS) showed evidence that coconut water contains more potassium but less sodium (salt) than other sports drinks.
Unfortunately the research company was not mentioned and the link did not connect to the actual study. The researchers concluded that coconut water would be the drink of choice for moderate sports workouts and would definitely help with leg cramps. However, for heavy workout involving a lot of sweating, another drink might be better containing more sodium. Mr. de Medeiros concludes, “While coconut water is an effective sports drink that suits the needs of many, it may not be the ultimate sports drink to feed all your needs.”
