New Coconut Water Study Shows Great Potassium Level

A new study shows that the potassium level in coconut water is five times that available in Gatoraide or Poweraide. The study reported by James de Medeiros in Men’s Fitness Online  states that researchers giving a presentation at the National Meeting and Exposition of the American Chemical Society (ACS) showed evidence that coconut water contains more potassium but less sodium (salt) than other sports drinks.

Unfortunately the research company was not mentioned and the link did not connect to the actual study. The researchers concluded that coconut water would be the drink of choice for moderate sports workouts and would definitely help with leg cramps. However, for heavy workout involving a lot of sweating, another drink might be better containing more sodium. Mr. de Medeiros concludes, “While coconut water is an effective sports drink that suits the needs of many, it may not be the ultimate sports drink to feed all your needs.”

More research needs to be done about the various sports drinks, such as the long-term effects of sugar and other additives to sports drinks. Want to order some great coconut water to try for yourself? Just click this link and order some online today:

Homemade Sports Drinks with Coconut Water

CoCos_464x467pxRecently we’ve become aware of the dangers of many popular sports drinks. Here are these drinks promising good health and rejuvenation from workouts and races. First, there are the artificial colors, guaranteed to be bad for you and maybe even cancer-causing. One of the top brands still contains BVO (brominated vegetable oil) which is patented as a flame retardant. Then there is the sugar, disguised by various names. Is it needed to replenish your body? While sugar gives you quick energy during exercise, it doesn’t help replenish after you are finished. Unsweetened coconut water, full of vitamins, minerals and electrolytes (potassium and sodium) is definitely superior.

Homemade Sports Drinks Are Easy to Make

Making your own tasty sports drinks is easier than you might think. Just mix, pour into a portable bottle, cool in the frig and you’re ready to go. Below are some great recipes, adapted from Heather from her blog, to include coconut water.

1.Orange Twist Sports Drink

  • 3-4 cups coconut water (depending on the concentration you prefer)
  • 3/4 cup freshly squeezed orange juice (about 2-3 oranges)
  • 1/4 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 1/4 teaspoon celtic sea salt or real salt
  • 2 tablespoons raw honey or maple syrup (or more to taste)
  • a few drops of Concentrace minerals drops (optional)

It’s best to have freshly squeezed juice but frozen juice can be substituted. If you make the drink in batches it should keep in the frig for a week.  Heather says we are all deficient in trace minerals so she adds them to all unheated food and drinks.

2. Lemon Sports Drink

3. Herbal Cooler

There have been a number of medical studies of coconut water in the past 5 years. While there are testimonials about the benefits of coconut water, there needs to be controlled studies to back up this reported evidence. Several studies were done at the Biochemistry Department of India’s University of Kerala using lab rats.

The Department of Biochemistry at India’s University of Kerala has repeatedly examined the effect of coconut water on lab rats and done so from multiple angles. In one study, they reported that coconut water reduced blood sugar and oxidative stress in diabetic rats. [2] Another study found that coconut water reduced high blood pressure and improved antioxidant activity. [3] Further research revealed a beneficial effect on cholesterol. [4] Read more here.

Dr. Edward Group, writing online for Global Healing Center states that coconut water is also known as the best way to rehydrate after exercise. There are a number of reasons that it is better for you than the flashy sports drinks. It’s natural, full of vitamins and minerals and also electrolytes. When you have been exercising and sweating you lose more than just water.  Coconut water helps you rehydrate without the sugar, acidity or calories of soft drinks or sports drinks.

When researchers in Malaysia compared the rehydration efficacy of plain water, sports drinks, and coconut water, coconut water was the shining star. A study that included ten healthy males, each exercising for 90 minutes, determined that not only was sodium-enriched coconut water extremely effective for whole body rehydration, it was also better tolerated- no nausea or upset stomach. Coconut Water as a Sports Training Drink

CoconutsVery recently coconut water has taken the world by storm, appearing in health food stores as well as grocery stores, even in coolers for yoga training and of course along with other sports drinks in the sport training drink sections. What’s all the publicity about coconut water?

First, let’s clear up the difference between various coconut products. Coconut water is the liquid found in immature coconuts. Coconut milk is a mixture of the coconut pulp and coconut water. This is not to be confused with coconut cream, a thick, sweet paste used for cooking and some cocktails. It’s totally different from shredded and often sweetened coconut we find on top of cakes and in cookies. Coconut water is the purest form and full of vitamins and minerals.

Sports Training Drinks

Which leads us back to sports training. According to Pamela Nisevich Bede writing for Runner’s World, coconut water is definitely superior to other sports drinks as a replacement for electrolytes and other nutrients depleted during a tough sports workout.

That said, coconut water does offer some benefits. It’s a natural way to replenish electrolytes after hard workouts. Unsweetened varieties are free of the sugar, artificial sweeteners, or dyes contained in many conventional sports drinks. And it’s high in potassium and magnesium, two nutrients the body needs for general health and good performance.

An 8-ounce carton of unsweetened coconut water has approximately 40 calories and nine grams of sugar, compared with approximately 50 calories and 14 grams of sugar for the same serving of Gatorade. Read more here.

It’s important to find unsweetened coconut water without any additives. On the other hand, coconut water, the juice from young coconuts, is high in potassium. One 12 oz. can of coconut water contains 690 mg of potassium, more potassium than a banana and certainly more than popular sports drinks which contain 140 mg. Our western diet is low in potassium and it is important to athletes as it prevents muscle cramps.

While most commercial coconut water products are pure coconut water, it’s important to read the labels as some contain sugar, fruit juices or other additives. One of the best coconut water products on the market is by The Cocos Pure Beverage Corp and is available in health food stores and by special order. Why not try some today? Benefits of Coconut Water for Sports

p1120526We know coconut water is chock full of vitamins and minerals, but did you know how beneficial it is for extreme exercise such as the top athletes practice? Here is a testimonial of a sports figure who swears by coconut water to not only get him through the most grueling workouts but also for recovery after sports matches.

What exactly is coconut water?  It is the juice from a young green coconut.  If you were to open this type of coconut you would find it full of liquid.  You could also spoon out the coconut pulp which will soon turn into the coconut meat.  It’s the consistency of pudding and just as delicious.  The clear coconut water should not be confused with coconut meat or coconut oil.  It has more potassium than 3 bananas, low in calories, fat and cholesterol.

Here’s what tennis star, John Isner had to say about using coconut water after his 11-hour marathon Wimbledon win.  “It is super hydrating and has kept me going in long matches and prevented me from cramping even in the hottest and most humid conditions,” Isner says.  He mixed it with protein powder for his post-match recovery.

A number of studies have found that while coconut water is adequate for recreational athletes, professional athletes and those who sweat excessively need still more carbohydrates and sodium, and it is necessary for these athletes to supplement coconut water by adding more salt and eating snacks such as raisins or pretzels.  Even John Isner drank coconut water with added salt the night before his matches.

Another benefit of coconut water is that it causes less nausea, bloating or stomach upsets for athletes who are under extreme pressure to preform.  It is easier to digest than the usual sports drinks. I can attest to this remedy as I once found myself suffering from stomach upset in a third world country without good medical care nearby. Coconut water was what got me through it.

Remember that not all brands of coconut water are created equal.  Be sure to find one that is processed with little or no heat and does not contain additives or sugar.  Also, coconut trees can be sprayed just as any other crop, so search for one that is organic.  CocosPure meets all of these criteria, so why not try it today and taste the difference?  Better yet, take some with you next time you hit the gym or the trail.
