Since not everyone lives near a coconut grove, let’s explore which of the commercial drinks are the best for your health.
First, here are some of the things to avoid when shopping for your coconut water.
- coconut water made from concentrate, not fresh – This is a good way to cut down the vitamin and mineral benefits
- taking coconut water from mature coconuts or from young ones that were harvested weeks before the water is extracted – When coconuts become more mature, the water looses some of the nutrients. Likewise when the coconuts are harvested young but left on the ground sometimes for weeks some of the health benefits are lost.
- adding “natural” flavors or sugar – Chances are that if you see flavors or sweeteners added the water comes from a mature coconut, and these are added to cover up the now acidic and less nutritious flavor of the water.
- pasteurizing it with heat – Here is another way to decrease the mineral and vitamin content. According to foodbabe.com, a website which explores what is really in your food,
” It has been shown that heat also destroys some of the vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients and also denatures enzymes – stripping its benefits and much of its flavor. If coconut water is from concentrate, this would be the second time it’s heated. Obviously, your best bet is to seek out and find unpasteurized raw coconut water.”
- The worst of all – dipping coconuts in formaldehyde or sodium metabisulphite – This sounds like a horror show, but it is done before sending whole coconuts to other countries to keep them from spoiling. Certainly some of these strong poisons could seep into the coconut meat and water. If you live far from a coconut producing country, please be careful about buying fresh coconuts, especially ones with the green husks still on.
The bottom line is to read the labels on the coconut water containers. You want water that is HPP (high pressure processing) or at least minimally heated during the processing, without added ingredients, collected from young coconuts and the water extracted immediately, and of course taken from organic coconuts for pure coconut water.
