Homemade Sports Drinks with Coconut Water

CoCos_464x467pxRecently we’ve become aware of the dangers of many popular sports drinks. Here are these drinks promising good health and rejuvenation from workouts and races. First, there are the artificial colors, guaranteed to be bad for you and maybe even cancer-causing. One of the top brands still contains BVO (brominated vegetable oil) which is patented as a flame retardant. Then there is the sugar, disguised by various names. Is it needed to replenish your body? While sugar gives you quick energy during exercise, it doesn’t help replenish after you are finished. Unsweetened coconut water, full of vitamins, minerals and electrolytes (potassium and sodium) is definitely superior.

Homemade Sports Drinks Are Easy to Make

Making your own tasty sports drinks is easier than you might think. Just mix, pour into a portable bottle, cool in the frig and you’re ready to go. Below are some great recipes, adapted from Heather from her blog, Mommypotamus.com to include coconut water.

1.Orange Twist Sports Drink

  • 3-4 cups coconut water (depending on the concentration you prefer)
  • 3/4 cup freshly squeezed orange juice (about 2-3 oranges)
  • 1/4 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 1/4 teaspoon celtic sea salt or real salt
  • 2 tablespoons raw honey or maple syrup (or more to taste)
  • a few drops of Concentrace minerals drops (optional)

It’s best to have freshly squeezed juice but frozen juice can be substituted. If you make the drink in batches it should keep in the frig for a week.  Heather says we are all deficient in trace minerals so she adds them to all unheated food and drinks.

2. Lemon Sports Drink

3. Herbal Cooler
